A Teach the Teacher or Train the Trainer course may count towards specialty recruitment self-assessment or portfolio criteria. CPD points and recruitment application points are different. The guide below identifies the relevant published criterion and which of our live courses meets the course-duration requirement.

For IMT and ACCS-IM applicants: the official guidance asks for a certificate or other evidence of completion and a course outline showing the duration and how the training was delivered. Important: Recruitment points are awarded by the recruiting body, not ISC Medical. Your course must be completed by the relevant deadline and supported by the required evidence. Both live courses cover the essential skills needed to plan, deliver and evaluate effective healthcare teaching. The 1-Day Essentials Course delivers the core programme; the 2-Day Comprehensive Course adds substantial practice, individual coaching and more advanced methods.

The emphasis throughout is on applying educational principles in clinical supervision, presentations, tutorials and everyday workplace teaching.

Some participants attend to obtain formal evidence for a specialty training application. Others want to become more effective teachers, clinical supervisors or facilitators. Both groups are welcome, including doctors and other healthcare professionals.

Doctors applying for specialty training

The live courses are particularly useful where your application requires evidence of formal training in teaching. The 1-Day Essentials Course provides more than 6 hours of synchronous teaching, while the 2-Day Comprehensive Course provides more than 12 hours across two days.

Resident doctors and registrars

The course helps you develop practical skills for teaching medical students, foundation doctors and other colleagues while building formal evidence of your development as an educator.

SAS doctors and locally employed doctors

Teach the Teacher training can support appraisal, professional development and portfolio evidence while strengthening the practical skills needed to supervise and develop colleagues.

How much do the live courses cost, and is there a discount?

The 1-Day Essentials Course costs £220 and the 2-Day Comprehensive Course costs £399, including VAT. Save 10% when you book two places on this course or combine it with any other ISC Medical course.

Can the live course count for an IMT or ACCS-IM application point?

The published IMT/ACCS-IM teaching criterion awards one point for qualifying training in teaching below PGCert or PGDip level, with at least six hours of synchronous live teaching. Both our 1-Day and 2-Day live courses meet that duration requirement. Final scoring depends on your eligibility, evidence and the guidance for your recruitment round. What evidence should I keep for my specialty application?

Keep your course completion certificate and a course outline stating the duration, teaching format and subject matter. IMT Recruitment explicitly mentions evidence of completion and evidence of course delivery. The live hours matter: CPD hours alone do not demonstrate that a course meets a synchronous-training requirement. Always confirm your specialty's latest evidence rules.

Which Live Teach the Teacher Course should I choose for a specialty application?

If the criterion requires at least 6 hours of synchronous live training in teaching, the Live 1-Day Teach the Teacher Essentials Course for Doctors provides more than 6 hours and will normally meet that duration requirement. The Live 2-Day Teach the Teacher Comprehensive Course for Doctors provides more than 12 hours across two days and is appropriate where a longer course is required or where you want more substantial development as an educator.

Requirements vary between specialties and recruitment rounds, so always check the current official scoring guidance before booking solely for application points.

Do you offer a self-paced Teach the Teacher course?

Yes. If you prefer to complete your Teach the Teacher training around your existing clinical and personal commitments, we also offer a Self-Paced Teach the Teacher Programme for Doctors.

The self-paced programme gives you 90 days to work through the e-learning material and includes a two-hour synchronous live webinar with an ISC Medical trainer. It provides 12 CPD points / hours and is suitable for CCT, CESR and professional portfolios.

If you are completing Teach the Teacher training specifically for a specialty application, check the current requirements carefully. Some applications require a minimum number of hours of synchronous live teaching, in which case our live courses may be the more appropriate option.

Can I use my NHS Study Budget to pay for the course?

Many doctors are able to reclaim the cost of the course through their NHS Study Budget, subject to local approval. We provide a full VAT invoice and CPD certificate to support reimbursement claims.

Are the Live Teach the Teacher Courses suitable for CCT and CESR portfolios?

Both the 1-day and 2-day courses provide formal, CPD-accredited evidence of training in teaching that can support CCT and CESR portfolios. The exact evidence required varies between specialties and pathways, so you should check the requirements relevant to your portfolio.

The 2-Day Comprehensive Course may be particularly useful if you want to demonstrate more extensive development as a clinical educator because it provides additional teaching practice, feedback and coaching.

What is the difference between Teach the Teacher and Train the Trainer?

Teach the Teacher and Train the Trainer are commonly used to describe courses designed to improve the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to teach and train other people.

Our programme covers core areas of healthcare education including session planning, learner engagement, teaching methods, presentation and facilitation skills, feedback and evaluation.

What time do the Teach the Teacher courses start and finish?

Both live courses run from 9:30am to 4:30pm (UK time). The 1-Day Essentials Course follows this timetable on its single course day. The 2-Day Comprehensive Course follows the same timetable on both days. The scheduled day includes breaks.

How much synchronous teaching is included?

Synchronous teaching means live, real-time teaching in which you can interact directly with the trainer and other participants.

  • The Live 1-Day Teach the Teacher Essentials Course includes more than 6 hours of synchronous live teaching.
  • The Live 2-Day Teach the Teacher Comprehensive Course includes more than 6 hours on each day and more than 12 hours of synchronous live teaching in total.
How large are the live Teach the Teacher groups?

We limit each live course to a maximum of 9 participants. This gives everyone more opportunity to ask questions, contribute to discussions, take part in practical exercises and receive feedback than would normally be possible in a large webinar or lecture.

My employer wants to pay for my place. What is the process?

If your employer cannot book directly through the website using a credit card or procurement card, payment by invoice may be possible. Contact us at enquiries@iscmedical.co.uk for details.

Employer invoicing can take several weeks to process, so it is most suitable when you are booking a course more than six weeks in advance.

When will I receive my Teach the Teacher certificate?

Certificates are usually sent by email on the next working day after the course has ended. If you have not received your certificate, please contact enquiries@iscmedical.co.uk.

Can I change my Teach the Teacher Course date after booking?

Yes. You may postpone your course date free of charge on one occasion provided you give at least 8 days' notice before the course start date.
