How your GP interview coaching works

Your one-to-one GP interview coaching is tailored to your experience and, where relevant, the specific salaried GP or partnership post you are applying for. Before your session, your ISC Medical coach can review your CV or application form together with the job description, person specification and any information provided by the practice. This allows us to understand your background and focus the session on the areas most likely to improve your interview performance.

Agree the priorities for your session

At the start of the session, your coach will establish what you want to achieve and where the available time is likely to be most useful. You may be applying for your first salaried GP role, moving from a salaried post towards partnership, returning to general practice after time away or preparing for an interview with a practice you particularly want to join. The session can then concentrate on the questions, evidence and areas of your experience that matter most.

Practise realistic GP interview questions

A substantial part of the session can be used for realistic interview practice. This may include a timed mock interview or more focused work on particular areas such as motivation, teamwork, workload, patient safety, complaints, quality improvement, leadership, business awareness or partnership responsibilities. Your coach can also use follow-up questions to explore how you think rather than simply whether you have prepared a polished opening answer.

Receive detailed individual feedback

Your feedback looks at the content, structure and delivery of your answers. We can identify where an answer is too generic, where you have missed an opportunity to use stronger evidence from your experience or where your response does not yet show the level of judgement expected for the post. For partnership interviews in particular, we can also explore whether your answers demonstrate a realistic understanding of the wider responsibilities that come with being part of a practice rather than simply working within it.

Put the feedback into practice

Where appropriate, your coach will return to areas after discussing them with you so that you can try a different approach immediately. The aim is not simply to tell you what a better answer might sound like. It is to help you understand why one approach is stronger and develop answers that remain natural and adaptable.

GP interview preparation built around the role

GP interviews vary considerably depending on the type of post and the practice carrying out the recruitment.

A salaried GP interview may focus heavily on clinical workload, teamwork, patient safety, communication and how you would fit into the practice. A partnership interview may go considerably further into leadership, service development, business awareness, workforce, finance and the responsibilities of becoming an owner and decision-maker within the organisation.

That is why our coaching is not based on one fixed set of GP interview questions.

If you have a specific post approaching, we can use the information supplied by the practice to consider what they are likely to be looking for, which aspects of your experience are most relevant and where your answers need to go beyond generic statements.

The objective is to help you demonstrate not only that you can do the job, but why you are a good fit for that particular practice and role.

One-to-one GP interview coaching for salaried and partnership posts

What can we work on?

Every session is different because the coaching is based on your background, the type of GP role and the areas where individual practice is likely to make the greatest difference.

Why this practice and why this role?

Practices usually want to understand why you are interested in them specifically rather than simply why you want another GP job. We can help you develop a more convincing explanation of what attracts you to the role, how your experience fits the practice and what you could contribute beyond the basic requirements of the post.

Your clinical and professional experience

You may be asked about your clinical strengths, areas you want to develop, difficult cases, patient safety, complaints, significant events or how you manage uncertainty. We can help you select appropriate examples and communicate them clearly without turning your answers into lengthy case histories.

Teamwork and working within a practice

General practice depends heavily on effective relationships between GPs, nurses, pharmacists, managers, reception teams and other professionals. Your interview may explore how you deal with disagreement, support colleagues, communicate under pressure or contribute to the wider team.

Workload, resilience and competing demands

Practices may want to understand how you manage workload, prioritise safely and respond when demand exceeds the time or resources available. We can work on questions involving clinical workload, administrative demands, interruptions, boundaries and the practical realities of working in general practice.

Quality improvement and patient safety

You may be asked about audit, quality improvement, significant events, prescribing, complaints or changes you have made to improve care. The coaching can help you move beyond simply describing an activity and explain what you learned, what changed and how you would apply that experience in the new practice.

Leadership and service development

Even salaried GP posts may involve leadership, teaching, supervision or responsibility for developing aspects of the service. For partnership interviews, this becomes even more important. We can explore your ideas for service development, how you influence others and how you balance clinical ambitions with practical constraints.

Preparing for GP partnership

A partnership interview is not simply a more senior version of a salaried GP interview. The partners may be considering whether they want to share responsibility, risk and long-term decision-making with you. Your answers therefore need to demonstrate that you understand the wider implications of becoming a partner. We can work on questions involving business awareness, leadership, recruitment, finance, premises, staffing, workload, investment, service development and how you would contribute to the long-term direction of the practice.

Questions you want to ask the practice

The questions you ask can also reveal how seriously you have thought about the role. We can help you develop thoughtful questions about the practice, team, workload, development opportunities and, for partnership posts, the practical and strategic issues you would want to understand before joining.

Meet your GP interview coach

Olivier Picard

Managing Director, ISC Medical

Olivier has extensive experience preparing doctors for senior medical interviews and has worked with GP candidates applying for both salaried and partnership posts.

His background in business and management is particularly relevant to GP partnership interviews, where candidates may need to demonstrate much more than clinical competence. He can help you explore how you present your understanding of leadership, finance, workforce, service development, difficult decisions and the wider responsibilities involved in helping to run a practice.

As an experienced trainer and lay member on interview panels, Olivier also brings an interviewer's perspective to the coaching. Rather than giving you answers to memorise, he will challenge your reasoning, identify where your evidence could be stronger and help you understand what an interviewer may be trying to establish through a particular question.

Preparing for a GP partnership interview

Partnership interviews require a different level of preparation because the practice is considering you not only as a clinician, but as a potential colleague in running the organisation.

You may need to demonstrate that you understand how decisions about workload, staffing, finance, service development and risk can affect the whole practice.

The panel may also be interested in how you would respond when your own priorities differ from those of the other partners, how you approach difficult decisions and what you would contribute to the future development of the practice.

This does not mean that you need to arrive as an expert in every aspect of GP finance or practice management. It does mean being able to show curiosity, commercial awareness, good judgement and an understanding that partnership carries responsibilities beyond your own clinical workload.

Your coach can help you identify where your existing experience already demonstrates these qualities and where your answers need to make the transition from employee thinking to partnership thinking more explicit.

Frequently asked questions

The coaching is designed for doctors preparing for salaried GP and GP partnership interviews.

The session is tailored to your experience, the type of post you are applying for and, where relevant, the particular practice carrying out the interview.

Each one-to-one GP interview coaching session lasts 90 minutes and is delivered live online via Zoom.

Yes. If you have a particular interview approaching, you can send us the job information, application and any other details provided by the practice.

Your coach can use these to shape the session around the likely requirements and priorities of that particular role.

Where available, send your CV or application together with the job description, person specification and any information you have about the practice or interview process.

You can also tell us about any particular questions or areas that you want to practise.

Your session can include a realistic timed mock interview followed by detailed feedback.

Alternatively, you may get more value from focused practice on particular areas, especially if you are preparing for a partnership interview or have specific concerns.

Salaried GP interviews commonly explore your motivation for the role, clinical experience, teamwork, patient safety, communication, workload management, quality improvement and how you would contribute to the practice.

The exact emphasis varies considerably between practices, which is why the coaching is tailored rather than based on one fixed list of questions.

Partnership interviews usually look beyond your clinical ability and consider whether you are ready to share responsibility for the practice as an organisation.

This may involve leadership, finance, workforce, business awareness, service development, workload, decision-making and how you would work with the other partners over the longer term.

You do not need to become an accountant before your interview, but you should demonstrate an appropriate level of commercial and financial awareness.

Your coach can help you think about how financial considerations interact with staffing, workload, premises, service development and the sustainability of the practice.

Yes. If there are career gaps, previous difficulties, unusual career choices or other areas that you expect the practice to ask about, these can form part of your coaching.

The aim is to help you discuss them clearly and honestly while demonstrating appropriate reflection.

No. The purpose of the coaching is to help you develop answers based on your own experience rather than memorise somebody else's script.

We help you understand what the interviewer is trying to assess, identify your strongest evidence and communicate it clearly and naturally.

Yes. This can be particularly valuable for partnership interviews.

We can help you develop questions that allow you to understand the role and practice properly while also demonstrating that you have thought seriously about joining the organisation.

If you have previous interview feedback, bring it to the session.

Your coach can help you interpret the feedback, identify where your answers or interview technique may need to change and practise alternative approaches.

Yes. Some candidates book an initial session to identify areas to develop and a further session closer to the interview to practise again after working on the feedback.

A 10% discount is available when you book two one-to-one coaching sessions.

There is no fixed interval, but it is useful to leave enough time to act on the feedback from your session.

A session closer to the interview can also be useful for final practice and refinement once most of your preparation is already complete.

What our GP candidates say

"Just thought I would let you know that I was successful in my second round interview for the partnership position at Belvoir Health Group, so thanks to you and Olivier for your advice. I had to do another PowerPoint presentation and discuss a scenario. I kept the second presentation to just 5 slides and was much better prepared.

Thanks for your help - will recommend you in the future. I got the job ... subject to agreeing terms and the decision being ratified by the wider partnership. Thank you so much. You enabled me to get closer to presenting myself accurately."

John
GP Partnership Applicant

"I had an offer of partnership soon after my session. I will be joining the practice in July and thank you once again for all the excellent coaching."

Maryam
GP Partnership Applicant

"I'm not sure you remember me but I just wanted to let you know I was offered the partnership post I applied for. Really wanted to thank you for your help. Was definitely useful."

Pramit
GP Partnership Applicant

"The interview was good and the questions were all expected. I even was able to understand what I could have improved in my answers. That is a good beginning. You opened my eyes to what the interviewer was trying to see when he was asking questions, that is the greatest achievement. Thanks again for all the help. I have been offered a GP partnership and have accepted the same. Wanted to thank you for the help provided with the interview preparation."

Santhosh
GP Partnership Applicant

"Dear Olivier, just to let you know that I had an interview last night. They rang last night to offer me a permanent part-time position as part of a job share, not just the two-year contract I was anticipating. Very pleased. The trickiest question I was asked was what I would choose as my desert island disc! Many thanks for your help."

Michelle
GP Applicant

"Interview was yesterday afternoon, I got the job! The interview went well, I was happy with the presentation and all the questions I think I had anticipated. Much to my surprise, I did get asked about my weaknesses, and I used your suggestion about delegating, as well as conflict resolution and pretty much all the other questions I went over with you.

It has been a long journey to get here, and it still hasn't quite sunk in. It was definitely worth those two hours of interview practice, Olivier. Thanks again. I'll make sure I recommend you and ISC."

GP Applicant
