Overview · Live Medical Leadership & Management Course

Leadership in healthcare is rarely about simply telling people what to do. Healthcare professionals work within multidisciplinary teams, complex organisations and services where priorities compete, resources are constrained and change often depends on influencing people over whom they have no direct authority.

Our live, two-day Medical Leadership & Management Course provides an interactive environment in which to explore these challenges with an experienced trainer and other healthcare professionals. Delivered live on Zoom, the course combines facilitated teaching, discussion, practical exercises and reflection to help you become a more confident and effective leader in healthcare.

Understanding yourself as a leader

Effective leadership starts with self-awareness. You will explore different approaches to leadership and consider your own preferred style, strengths and limitations.

We look at how leadership needs to adapt according to the situation and the people involved. An approach that works well with an experienced and highly motivated colleague may be ineffective with someone who is struggling, inexperienced or resistant to change.

Emotional intelligence is an important part of this. Greater awareness of your own reactions, communication style and emotional triggers can help you manage yourself more effectively and understand how your behaviour affects those around you.

Leading people rather than simply managing tasks

Healthcare leadership depends heavily on relationships. You may need to motivate a team, influence a senior colleague, support someone who is struggling, delegate responsibility or address behaviour or performance that has become a problem.

The course explores how effective teams work and the role a leader plays in creating the conditions in which people can perform well. We look at communication, motivation, delegation, accountability and the balance between supporting colleagues and being prepared to have difficult conversations when necessary.

You will also develop practical approaches to coaching and mentoring. Rather than always providing the answer yourself, you will learn techniques that help other people think through problems, develop their own solutions and become more independent.

Influencing and leading change

Many healthcare professionals have considerable responsibility without having direct managerial authority over everyone whose cooperation they need. The ability to influence is therefore central to effective leadership.

We explore how communication, credibility, relationships and an understanding of other people's perspectives can help you influence more effectively.

The same principles become particularly important when leading change. Even sensible improvements can fail when people do not understand the purpose, feel excluded from the process or have legitimate concerns that have not been addressed.

You will consider how to engage stakeholders, understand resistance, build support and help move a team or service from an idea to practical implementation.

Throughout the course, the emphasis is on applying leadership and management principles to situations you are likely to encounter in healthcare rather than studying theory in isolation.

Structure · Live Medical Leadership & Management Course

The two days combine facilitated teaching with discussion, exercises, reflection and practical application. The different parts of the course are deliberately connected: understanding the environment in which you work influences how you lead; how you understand yourself affects how you communicate; and communication affects your ability to influence people, lead teams and bring about change.

NHS Structures and Challenges

Effective leadership in the NHS requires an understanding of the system in which you are working. We look at how NHS organisations and services are structured, how responsibilities are distributed and how different parts of the system interact. We also consider the pressures facing NHS services and what these mean for leaders making decisions, setting priorities and trying to improve care.

  • Understand how the NHS is structured and organised
  • Explore how different parts of the NHS work together
  • Understand roles, responsibilities and accountability within NHS organisations
  • Consider workforce pressures and increasing demand
  • Explore financial constraints and competing priorities
  • Consider how to maintain quality and patient safety in pressured services
  • Understand how NHS structures affect leadership and decision-making
  • Lead within complex systems and across organisational boundaries

Leadership Foundations and Personal Leadership Style

There is no single leadership style that works in every situation. We explore the relationship between leadership and management, different approaches to leadership and how your own preferences affect the way you lead. You will consider when you may need to adapt your approach according to the people, circumstances and challenges in front of you.

  • Understand the difference between leadership and management
  • Explore different leadership styles and approaches
  • Identify your own leadership style
  • Recognise your strengths and limitations as a leader
  • Adapt your approach to different people and situations
  • Choose appropriate leadership approaches for different circumstances
  • Develop leadership confidence and credibility

Emotional Intelligence, Communication and Influence

Leadership depends heavily on how well you understand yourself and other people. This part of the course explores the role of emotional intelligence in workplace relationships and how greater self-awareness can improve the way you communicate, respond to difficult situations and influence others, particularly when you cannot rely on formal authority.

  • Understand emotional intelligence and its role in leadership
  • Develop greater self-awareness and emotional resilience
  • Recognise emotional triggers and behaviours
  • Build stronger workplace relationships
  • Communicate with greater clarity and impact
  • Influence people when you do not have direct authority
  • Manage challenging conversations professionally
  • Understand other people's perspectives and priorities

Leading Teams and Managing Performance

Leading a team involves more than allocating work. You need to understand how people work together, what motivates them and what may prevent a team from performing effectively. We look at how to create a productive team environment while balancing support for individuals with appropriate expectations, challenge and accountability.

  • Understand team dynamics and behaviour
  • Explore Belbin Team Roles and effective team working
  • Build and motivate effective teams
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams
  • Support colleagues and develop performance
  • Recognise and address underperformance
  • Delegate effectively while maintaining accountability
  • Create positive and productive team cultures

Coaching and Mentoring

Good leaders do not need to provide the solution to every problem. Coaching and mentoring can help colleagues develop their own judgement, confidence and ability to solve problems. We explore practical techniques that can be used not only in formal coaching relationships, but also in supervision, team leadership and everyday conversations.

  • Understand the differences between coaching and mentoring
  • Develop practical coaching and mentoring skills
  • Use the GROW coaching model
  • Use effective listening and questioning techniques
  • Support individual development
  • Help others identify options and develop their own solutions

Leading and Managing Change

Change in healthcare depends as much on people as it does on the quality of the original idea. We look at why people may respond differently to change, how to understand legitimate concerns and resistance, and how leaders can engage the people whose support will be needed to turn an idea into sustained improvement.

  • Lead and manage change effectively
  • Understand different responses and resistance to change
  • Communicate the need for change
  • Identify and engage stakeholders
  • Influence others and build support
  • Use action learning and practical problem-solving approaches
  • Maintain momentum through implementation
  • Create a personal leadership action plan

Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to relate the material to situations from your own professional life so that you leave with practical actions you can use when you return to work.

Develop practical leadership and management skills you can use in your everyday work.

Why Choose ISC Medical's Live Medical Leadership & Management Course?

Small-group, interactive learning

We limit each Live Medical Leadership & Management Course to a maximum of 15 participants. This allows people from different professions, specialties and levels of seniority to contribute their own perspectives while keeping the course interactive.

The two days include discussion, practical exercises, reflection and group activities rather than relying on continuous presentations. You will have opportunities to explore situations from your own workplace and learn from the experiences of other healthcare professionals.

Practical rather than purely theoretical

Leadership models are useful when they help explain what is happening in practice. Knowing the terminology alone does not make someone a better leader.

We therefore introduce theories and frameworks where they provide a useful way of understanding behaviour, teams, communication or change, and then apply them to realistic healthcare situations.

The aim is for you to leave not simply knowing more about leadership and management, but with techniques you can actually use.

Designed around the realities of the NHS and healthcare

Healthcare creates particular leadership challenges. Professional hierarchies do not always match managerial ones. Multidisciplinary teams bring together people with different expertise, priorities and perspectives. Leaders may need to influence colleagues over whom they have no direct authority, while decisions can involve patient safety, limited resources and competing demands.

By combining an understanding of NHS structures and challenges with practical leadership and management skills, the course helps you see how the wider system influences the decisions you make, the people you need to engage and the changes you may be trying to achieve.

Experienced leadership and management trainers

The course is delivered live by experienced trainers with expertise in leadership, management and communication and extensive experience of working with healthcare professionals.

This combination allows established management principles to be explored in a way that is practical, accessible and directly relevant to clinical and healthcare workplaces.
