WHY COME TO ISC MEDICAL FOR CONSULTANT INTERVIEW SKILLS?

SMALL GROUP OF 6 PARTICIPANTS: In order to maintain the high quality of our courses, we accept only 6 participants on each consultant interview skills course. You will therefore be able to raise and address at length any personal issues you want to discuss.

MOCK INTERVIEWS AND PLENTY OF PRACTICE: Since there are only 6 participants in each course, you go through a proper mock interview with consultant interview coaching. Ask our competitors how many people come to their courses; some take up to 200 people and mix you with ST trainees. You will be lucky if you get asked even one question! Interviews are about communication and you can only learn communication in a small group where you can participate and ask questions.

WE DON'T JUST TEACH YOU, WE COACH YOU: Whilst others may simply give you a few facts and techniques, we actually spend some time with you so that you understand the concepts, you are able to use them and apply them to your own circumstances. We support you personally throughout the day and even after the course, with our free email follow-up service.

FREQUENT COURSES: We know that people need courses that are on dates that suit them. For that reason, we organise up to 4 courses per week so you can find the date that suits you most. We are the only ones who can offer that (this is also what allows us to keep the number of participants low in each course).

UP-TO-DATE: During the course we will be working on the most commonly asked consultant interview questions in the last twelve months. We will also deal with all major current NHS issues.

HIGH RECOMMENDATION RATE & HIGH SUCCESS RATE: We are proud to say that, in all the feedback that we have received, absolutely every single participant felt that the course met all their expectations, was of very high standard, with the personal approach that they were looking for,  and offered extremely good value in relation to others that they might have been to. Our success rate is also very good: Over 90% of our candidates get a substantive post within 2 interviews following the course; a direct feature of our small group coaching.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

ISC Medical's consultant interview course is the most reputed course around. Our success is built on the personal approach that we take to our coaching by allowing you to practice in a small group. Our trainers are expert at providing constructive feedback and in guiding you to develop your own successful interview style. Here is some of the feedback we obtained for past courses, both recent and older so that you can see the consistency of quality in our courses.

"Very good facilities; clean and food was very good; central location and easy to find. I liked everything in the course, especially the fact we were in small groups with plenty of practice. I think it is just right; i have been to other courses but this is by far the best i have been to and certainly will help me to obtain the jobs i would want. Olivier was very knowlegdeable and has a lot of experience; He goes to the point and method of delivery was excellent. Also he simplified the nhs politics in a brilliant way. I have recommended it already to 2 friends and told them to go on waitlist for cancellations. I feel it was worth every penny... A, Ophthalmology consultant interview (27 June 2009)

"I liked the small group teaching; giving a framework to give winning answers to questions and the content, concentrating on presentation skills as opposed to too much detail on NHS issues, etc which are perfectly (and appropriately) covered in handout. Picking up on a few key topical NHS topics in an easy-to-understand format helped too. I also enjoyed receiving individualised feedback and the opportunity to observe and learn from other people's mistakes too. Olivier is very knowledgeable and a good communicator. He dissected our performances well. I am sure this course will continue to benefit from very positive word of mouth. A huge advantage over others is the small-group setting and the practice sessions. I will be spreading the word!" Neil, Anaesthetics Consultant Interview (1 June 2009)

"6:1 ratio allows enough exposure to "hot seat" questioning without being exhausting. Olivier was excellent, very knowledgeable about the whole process of medical interviews. He provided honest, constructive feedback. and came across as professional with enough humour to make the day enjoyable. The course demystified the interview process and gave me a lot of confidence. I was successful the following week at my first Consultant interview. I will be recommending the course to my colleagues." William, Radiology Consultant interview (27 May 2009)

"The course was very structured, concise and informative. It has given me a much more efficient and effective way to prepare for my interview and it distilled the information into the relevant aspects. It also made one think about how to use and organise information. Having just a small number of delegates on the course is perfect. Olivier was very good and clearly very experienced in his field. He gave very good constructive criticism and would then give examples of ways to modify/improve an answer using exactly the same information used, but never made anyone feel that the information they gave was useless. I felt that he had the balance of making us think and giving us the tools to be able to do this just right. I have already recommended your course to others." Elizabeth, Obstetrics & Gynaecology consultant interview (5 January 2009)

"Olivier was honest, confident and to the point. He got across the message very effectively as to what was expected at the interview and what each individual had to work on. I will recommend this course to my colleagues. I feel that it gave me a confidence in myself and to talk about why I was the best candidate for the job. This subsequently came across at my interview and this got me appointed." Christopher, Consultant Interview (20 November 2008)

"I liked the attention given to each participant and the mock interviews. The course covered ALL necessary topics for consultant interview. And I can say that because I just had an interview for a consultant post. The structure of my interview and questions were exactly as decribed on the course. Your course is exceptional! I recently had my first interview for consultant post in Cardiology and got the job!!! Dan is fantastic. I am over the moon and want to thank you very much. After attending the course I felt confident and well prepared. The course covered all topics and questions from my interview. Thank you Dan! Mirela, Consultant Interview, Cardiology (26 July 2008)

"The course was full of simple principles and ways in which to answer questions by a series of building blocks we can all practice. Olivier's knowledge and expertise shone through and we all wished he could do our interviews! The course put the emphasis back on the important questions/answers and gave just the right amount information on the important NHS issues. Olivier was good, knowledgeable, straight-talking but sensitive enough. I liked his direct and simple approach. An excellent course that I will be recommending to other people. Clare, Consultant interview course, Anaesthetics (1 February 2008)

"Having been on both the (another) course and the ISC course, the ISC course is so totally superior in all ways (notes, practice, location) that it is astonishing that they cost about the same money. I wish I'd known this beforehand as I would never have gone to the (another) course." Matthew, Consultant interview, Respiratory medicine (17 November 2007)

“I liked the small group format as it made discussion easy and we soon felt at ease with our teacher and fellow participants. I (surprisingly) liked the interview practice sessions and the chance to present a prepared answer at the start of the course because it reduced the anxiety I felt associated with an unknown event. Lovely trainer. I can't offer any suggestions for improvement as I felt Olivier did the job effortlessly. He had credibility and a very nice manner. Thank you for such a useful course. I hadn't been sure about whether it would be necessary, but now I understand exactly what is expected of me at a consultant interview and I simply would not have been ready without this day. A worthwhile investment.”
Kate, Consultant interview course, Anaesthetics (19 October 2007)

“Enjoyed the small group size. I did not feel that we had to hurry things up. Great trainer. Good insight into NHS and consultant interviews. Friendly, calm, to the point, constructively critical without being harsh. No one was left out in the discussions.” Gavin, Consultant interview course, Orthopaedics Surgery (19 October 2007)

“The small group allowed interaction, which definitely facilitated the learning process. Excellent trainer; I highly recommend the course and the tutor. Olivier's excellent manner is equalled by his knowledge of the NHS and consultant interview process. I will be recommending the course to my SpR colleagues.”
William (Urology), Consultant interview Course (22 September 2007)

“Excellent course. Olivier is probably the best communications skills trainer/facilitator that I've come across.” Alistair (Neurology), Consultant Interview Course

“The course was great. I have recently attended and got the job offered. The comments were that they have been interviewing for many years but mine was among the best. All I said in reply was that I was well trained in interview skills.” Amir (Gen. Surgery), Consultant Interview Course

“Well conducted, interactive, lots of opportunity to practice answers then advice on how to improve, format and structure of day well thought out and better than other courses I had looked at. Excellent, approachable and knowledgeable trainer.” Lilian (Respiratory medicine), Consultant interview Course

“Excellent trainer with massive insight into consultant interview skills. I learnt an awful lot from this course and the non-threatening 6-people only environment really helped me gain the confidence that I needed to confront a panel of 8. Thank you so much for all the comprehensive, educational and constructive feedback. I got the job against the local candidate. The interviewers were absolutely amazed! Everyone should attend this course. Having heard from some of my friends who attended other courses, this one is definitely the best consultant interview skills course around.” Ruth (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), Consultant interview course

CASE STUDY

Karen was applying for a substantive Anaesthetist post, competing against 32 other candidates in a popular region. Overall she felt that she was "pretty good at interviews" and didn't know why she kept coming close second when it came to the crunch. Karen felt that one of her strengths was that the was concise in her answers and that her direct approach to all questions was a positive asset.

During the course, we reassured Karren that her direct approach was indeed an asset, though she would need to use it appropriately, since, in some cases, this could be construed as defensive, sometimes even aggressive. By listening to other members of the group, and by practising answers herself, supported by our feedback and guidance, Karen was able to identify quickly at which level her answers should be positioned and how she could develop some of the points she made in a less abrupt manner, whilst simultaneously retaining her natural conciseness.

The transformation was remarkable throughout the day, as her performance during the afternoon mock interview demonstrated. After the course, Karren remained in touch with us by email and we were able to help her refine some of the examples that she had prepared. Karren then went on to obtain a substantive post within 3 weeks of the course and obtained feedback that she was "one of the best prepared candidates.

“Brilliant preparation for consultant interviews. This course really saved me a lot of time. I have just come back from my interview and they offered me the post. I couldn't have been better prepared. The practice/mock interviews, the fact that there were only six of us at the course and that, therefore, I could practice my answers, and the discussions that we had at the course really helped me clinch it on the day!” Ravi (Breast Surgery), Medical Interview Course for Consultant Interviews

“An excellent day in which I had plenty of opportunities to express myself. Excellent feedback provided by the trainer throughout the day. I particularly benefit from the practice interview in the afternoon as it really highlighted my strengths and weaknesses. I now know what I need to concentrate on during my preparation.” Vinesh (Diabetes & Endocrinology), Medical Interview Course for Consultant Interviews

“Enjoyed having a small interactive group and having structures to use info to answer questions. Very good trainer, with a strong structure and excellent knowledge of NHS issues. This is definitely the best course for anyone who is attending a consultant interview and I have already recommended it to several of my colleagues.” Maria (Cardiology), Medical Interview Course for Consultant Interviews

“Fantastic course. Really useful, actually the first course which kept me awake and interested all along.” Pradeep (Urology), Medical Interview Course for Consultant Interviews

CASE STUDY

When Sean came to the ISC course, he was visibly very nervous. He had attempted to get a substantive post three times previously and had been unsuccessful, despite having been the "preferred" candidate in two of the three interviews.

Throughout the course, our trainer identified that, although Sean attributed his lack of confidence to a simple lack of preparation, in fact it was linked to an inherent reluctance to talk about himself. As a result, his answers were vague and he was unable to produce suitable examples because he was worried about being "too touchy-feely".

We then worked with Sean and the other 5 members of the group to demonstrate how one could be personal without going outside of one's comfort zone. As a result, Sean was able to produce better targetted and more personal answers, an improvement that was illustrated by his confident performance during the afternoon's mock interview session. Sean was successful in obtaining a substantive post 2 weeks after attending the course
