WHY COME TO ISC MEDICAL FOR CONSULTANT INTERVIEW SKILLS?

SMALL GROUP OF 6 PARTICIPANTS: In order to maintain the high quality of our courses, we accept only 6 participants on each consultant interview skills course. You will therefore be able to raise and address at length any personal issues you want to discuss.

MOCK INTERVIEWS AND PLENTY OF PRACTICE: Since there are only 6 participants in each course, you go through a proper mock interview with consultant interview coaching. Ask our competitors how many people come to their courses; some take up to 200 people and mix you with ST trainees. You will be lucky if you get asked even one question! Interviews are about communication and you can only learn communication in a small group where you can participate and ask questions.

WE DON'T JUST TEACH YOU, WE COACH YOU: Whilst others may simply give you a few facts and techniques, we actually spend some time with you so that you understand the concepts, you are able to use them and apply them to your own circumstances. We support you personally throughout the day and even after the course, with our free email follow-up service.

FREQUENT COURSES: We know that people need courses that are on dates that suit them. For that reason, we organise up to 3 courses per week so you can find the date that suits you most. We are the only ones who can offer that (this is also what allows us to keep the number of participants low in each course).

UP-TO-DATE: During the course we will be working on the most commonly asked consultant interview questions in the last twelve months. We will also deal with all major current NHS issues.

HIGH RECOMMENDATION RATE & HIGH SUCCESS RATE: We are proud to say that, in all the feedback that we have received, absolutely every single participant felt that the course met all their expectations, was of very high standard, with the personal approach that they were looking for,  and offered extremely good value in relation to others that they might have been to. Our success rate is also very good: Over 90% of our candidates get a substantive post within 2 interviews following the course; a direct feature of our small group coaching.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

ISC Medical's consultant interview skills course is the most reputed course around. Our success is built on the personal approach that we take to our coaching by allowing you to practice in a small group. Our trainers are expert at providing constructive feedback and in guiding you to develop your own successful interview style. Here is some of the feedback we have been getting for past courses.

"Just to say that I was on the February course for Consultant interview skills, and wanted to say that I found it very helpful. I had my first consultant interview earlier this week and was successful in securing the post. I think this was very much helped by the skills I learned that day on the course. In particular, I don't think I realised before what the interview panel were seeking with particular styles of questions, e.g. about coming up with evidence of being a good teacher rather than just listing experience. Also it helped me through a specific difficulty I had about my CV (reflecting a switch from surgery to psychiatry when I was younger) which had always thrown me a bit in previous interviews. That was the first question which came up on Monday. Having practiced it on the course helped me get off to a confident start. Thank you for all your help, I will recommend your course to others in the future.
best wishes." Elizabeth, Consultant interview course, Psychiatry

“Very directed just to the interview itself. Good involvement of all participants. Nice balance of general answer tips and specific NHS issues. Mr Picard was very clear with explanations, did exactly what he had set out to do and gave clear suggestions on ways to tackle questions without resorting to just giving didactic answers. An excellent course that I would have no reservations in recommending to others.”
Paul (Anaesthetics), Consultant interview Course

“Very helpful. Covered exactly the sorts of areas I wanted. Plenty of advice and simple principles to apply. Thought-provoking without being frightening. Has given me an idea of what I can do to make a difference at forthcoming interview. Completely interview-based with key emphasis on answering real questions. Small enough group for this to work.”
Matthew (Orthopaedics), Consultant Interview Course

“I shall be recommending this course to my friends / colleagues. The small group made it non-threatening (unlike another course I went to!). Learnt interview techniques and how to format my answers rather than just topics. Excellent, likeable, personable, non-threatening, knowledgeable and qualified trainer. Excellent venue, easy to find, comfortable room with endless supply of refreshment.” Gina (Paediatrics Anaesthesia), Consultant interview

CASE STUDY

David felt that he had done a lot preparation for his consultant interview and was therefore surprised that, despite having done multiple mock interviews with his consultants, he had not been recruited for a substantive post in a trust where he already worked.

The feedback that he had received from the panel was that he was "thinking too much like a Registrar" and that he had wasted his time learning in-depth information about the NHS when he'd have been better off thinking about what he could offer the Trust as an individual. The Medical Director told him that his knowledge of the NHS was impressive but that he was applying for a consultant post, NOT a chief executive or medical director post.

During the course, we showed David how, although knowledge of NHS issues is important, it needs to be used and communicated carefully in order to demonstrate his maturity as a future consultant and not simply his ability to regurgitate what he had learnt in a management course. We also helped David focus his attention on management questions, showing him, through personal coaching and encouraging him to listen to other participants, how he could combine his knowledge of the NHS to demonstrate a more practical understanding of issues, and how he could combine this with his skills and experience to demonstrate his readiness for a consultant post.

We also encouraged David to use a different preparation method and to postpone doing mock interviews until he had properly brainstormed his own strengths, skills and experience so that he could then present them in a more organised and practical manner in his interview answers.

“The venue is excellent. The group setting is very ideal for full individual participation. Time keeping is spot on. Refreshment, food, service and environment are very good. The content of the course is excellent and intelligently setup. It keeps you awake and fully concentrated throughout the day. I would definitely recommend it to all SpRs. Olivier knows the UK health system and its entire organisation inside out. Excellent and truthful in his feedback and critics. Very passionate about what he does. Involves everybody throughout the course.”
Ahmed (Anaesthesia), Consultant interview

“Interactive, good thought provoking & informative course. Very good trainer, he kept the course rolling with enough stimulation. Overall a very good course.”
Mohan (Paediatrics), Consultant Interview Skills Course

“I went for the interview and got the job-Cons Clinical Oncology. The course was superb. The information was very well structured and I enjoyed the manner in which Mr. Picard discussed issues maintained complete interest. Top course, really.”
Madhavan (Clinical Oncology), Consultant Interview Skills Course

"I got my target job and have been appointed Senior lecturer in intensive care. The panel finally chose me over another applicant with a stronger research track record. I think your course really gave me the edge I needed."
Rupert (Intensive Care), Consultant Interview Skills Course

"It was good to be given so many opportunities to practice. I also found it very useful to observe other people's performances as it gave me an insight as to how I might sound and look from an outsider's perspective."
Paul (Emergency Medicine), Consultant Interview Skills Course

"Well structured course, with excellent advice being provided. A very good course, which I highly recommend. Olivier was an excellent, very talented orator, open and honest with constructive criticisms.”
Martin (Anaesthetics), Consultant interview

"I enjoyed the small group setting and the mock interview session in the afternoon. Excellent trainer providing good appraisal and feedback, with good knowledge of the interview process. I will recommend this course!"
David (Radiology), Consultant interview

“Fully engaging trainer with excellent personal feedback being provided.”
Rehana (Clinical Oncology), Consultant interview
